Robert Green-Warren, an incoming second year PhD student in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department, has been awarded a 2020 PhD Engineering Associate Fellowship. GEM is “a network of leading corporations, government laboratories, top universities, and top research institutions that enables qualified students from underrepresented communities to pursue graduate education in applied science and engineering.” Robert has also previously been awarded the SUPER-Grad Fellowship for the Fall 2019-2020 academic year, which supports his current research under the guidance of Prof.

Professor Assimina Pelegri has been elected to the chair position of the Engineering Sciences Segment (ESS) of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ESS supports and promotes the creation of technical content and activities through interactions with several entities; including ASME technical divisions, affiliated events and groups, and strategic partnerships with other external organizations.

Professor Yogesh Jaluria has been awarded the 2020 Holley Medal by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for pioneering achievements in fiber drawing and coating for both traditional and specialty fibers that resulted in the development of high quality fibers at reduced costs to meet the needs of emerging application areas. The ASME Holley Medal was established in 1924 and is awarded for outstanding and unique act(s) of an engineering nature, accomplishing a noteworthy and timely public benefit.

Professor Yogesh Jaluria has published a new book, entitled Design and Optimization of Thermal Systems, Third Edition: with MATLAB® Applications, CRC Press, 2020. This book provides systematic and efficient approaches to the design of thermal systems that are of interest in a wide range of applications. It presents basic concepts and procedures for conceptual design, problem formulation, modeling, simulation, design evaluation, achieving feasible design, and optimization.

"Professor Yuebin Guo has delivered three invited keynotes at recent international conferences. The first conference was 69th CIRP General Assembly (GA) in Birmingham, UK, August  18-24, 2019. The title of the keynote was “Machining of Biocompatible Materials - Recent Advances”. The second conference was the 18th International Manufacturing Conference (IMCC 2019) in Shenyang, China, October  9-12, 2019. The title of the keynote was “Machine Learning Enabled Process Signature for Surface Integrity Prognosis”.

Prof. Qingze Zou received an NSF grant to develop a sensing platform to achieve rapid, broadband nanomechanical mapping of live cells ("IIBR Instrumentation: Multiscale Multiplex Nanomechanical Stimulus and Sensing of Living Cells on 3D-Cell Culture"). The project is a collaboration between Prof. Zou (PI) and Prof. Juan Dong in Waksman Institute of Microbiology of Rutgers and Prof. Nan Gao in Biological Science of Rutgers-Newark as Co-PIs.

Together with the lab of Prof. Howon Lee of Rutgers MAE and Dr. Steven Kooi of MIT, Prof. Singer's lab has been researching the use of self-limiting electrospray deposition to modify the surface of parts created by additive manufacturing in work led by MAE researchers Dylan Kovacevich and Lin Lei. This research is now published at Applied Materials & Interfaces This article has also been reported on by Rutgers Today.

A proposal written by MAE faculty member, Jonathan Singer, assisted by PhD Candidate, Michael Grzenda, has been selected by NASA to improve crop production in space. The goal of the research is to use electrospray deposition to grow plants using absolutely minimal amounts of water. More information can be found here.

MAE master’s student Arielle Gamboa has won a graduate fellowship from Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society. The fellowship is awarded with the goal of financing one year of graduate study for a select group of members, chosen for merit, in order to advance engineering education and the profession. Arielle is currently completing her thesis, titled Morphological Control of Multifunctional Melting Gel Coatings via Electrospray Deposition, advised by Prof. Jonathan Singer.

Jonathan Singer, MAE faculty member, is honored to receive one of this year's two Provost's Award for Excellence in Innovative Teaching. This award is given to individual faculty whose teaching practices involve non-traditional approaches to enhance learning outcomes, including new forms of pedagogy, instructional technologies, and multimedia.
