Mission and Objectives

The Rutgers Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department develops technically competent professionals in the areas of mechanical and aerospace engineering who are prepared for a globally competitive and diverse workplace bringing with them the highest of ethical standards and an ability to communicate effectively, work in collaboration and apply a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving. Undergraduate and graduate students conduct scholarly, cutting-edge research in the fundamental and applied disciplines fostering innovative paradigms for addressing current and future societal challenges.

The curriculum in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Rutgers places emphasis on a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles and engineering methods of analysis and reasoning. The curriculum is comprehensive and lays the foundation for more advanced scientific and technical research, establishing the industry leaders of tomorrow.

The faculty of the department includes more than 30 Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering professors in addition to several visiting scientists and experts from local industry. Excellence in both teaching and research is a priority for all faculty, as reflected by honors conferred. Many faculty members are editors of international journals, such as the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer and Acta Mechanica, and serve on various editorial boards. Most are well known around the world for their research contributions and have won numerous awards.

Educational Objectives

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering curriculum is designed to meet the department's educational objectives:

  • To educate and train students in Mechanical Engineering in a technically sound, challenging and professional manner.
  • To prepare students to enter careers ready to make positive contributions to their professions and society, or to continue on to successful graduate research and education.
  • To instill in students the responsibilities and rewards associated with an engineering career and life-long service to the profession.

Student Learning Goals

Graduates from the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department will have:

  • A broad education, including humanities and social science studies.
    • Students will have the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.

Students will be proficient in the foundations of the engineering field: mathematics, science and engineering skills. Graduates will have:

  • The ability to design a system, component or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability.
  • The ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
  • The ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
  • The ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for their field of study.

Undergraduate Program

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has more than 30 internationally renowned faculty members in residence, teaching and conducting research on a broad range of topics. The department’s supporting staff includes three full-time administrative staff and two laboratory technicians. Departmental research is loosely grouped under the following banners: Design and Control; Solid Mechanics, Materials and Structures; Fluid Mechanics; and Thermal Sciences. We take pride in a program that fosters collegial student-faculty relationships and prepares students for successful careers in industry, government and academia.

Graduate Program

The graduate program of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers masters and doctoral degrees in an intellectually and academically stimulating environment. Our program takes pride in both the collegial student-faculty relationship it provides and in its preparation of students for successful careers in industry, government and academia. Our current enrollment is nearly 200 graduate students, of which the majority of students are currently employed in leading local corporations. To accommodate the needs of our part-time students, we offer multiple graduate courses during evening hours.

We have more than 30 internationally renowned faculty members in residence, who teach and conduct research on a broad range of topics. In addition, several distinguished colleagues from other departments are affiliated with our graduate program.
